Starbird Gift Box

Starbird is a magical story about love, freedom, and the wisdom of children.

Starbird's songs weave the richest dreams and delight all who hear him, but when the Moon King traps him in a cage as gift for his daughter, the colour and life in his voice begin to drip away. While the Moon King is blinded by greed and selfishness, his young daughter can clearly see the injustice and cruelty of his actions.

A heartfelt, lyrical story that shows the importance of standing up for what is right.

Sharon King-Chai is an award-winning designer and illustrator. As a child she loved to colour, doodle and create her own worlds through drawings. She loves to experiment in her work and use unusual materials. Her artwork references nature a lot and she often prints with ingredients such as potatoes, blackberries, onions, feathers and sticks.

In response to the book, children will explore techniques such as marbling, printing and collage. They will learn about the concept of negative space and use a range of art materials to create new and exciting effects. Children will learn more about the life and work of the illustrator and dig deeper into the themes of the book.
